Philosophy of Science: Popper | Kuhn | Feyerabend

This series focuses on the controversial ideas of Thomas Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend about the rationality of natural science. Their reputation as anti-methodologists and advocates of relativism earned Feyerabend the title of “the Salvador Dali of academic philosophy”, and “the worst enemy of science”.

While it is true that both oppose the idea that there is some single, invariant, and unifying “Scientific Method”, their positions are in fact more nuanced as they nevertheless continue to uphold a role for method in the pursuit of science.

By taking a closer look at their writings, we will be trying to get a more accurate assessment of their views on science.

Week 1. After Popper: the Historical Turn in Philosophy of Science

Week 2. The Incommensurability of Scientific Theories

Week 3. Relativism and Realism in Science
