"The ideal citizen is the scholar-athlete, the man of thought and the man of action." - Plato

GuruAnaerobic | Urtats Etxegarai | Jordan B. Goldstein

Hosted by DecafQuest

This course explores the importance of sports & physical exercise as a cornerstone to living a better life. We will be reflecting on the interdependence of the mind & the body. We are going to be examining the different dimensions of sports, athleticism, and exercise from the prism of GuruAnaerobic (athlete & coach), Urtats Etxegarai (coach, ex-engineer), and Jordan B. Goldstein (coach and sports historian).

Each lecturer will be giving one talk followed by a discussion for a total of 3 sessions (2-hour), in a 3-week course.

No prerequisites or background knowledge is required. If you’re interested in sports, exercise, and their philosophical dimension, then this course is for you.

The course is hosted by DecafQuest, a bridge dweller.

Week 1:

From Ancient Greece to Modern Times: The Virtue of Sports & Exercise

Week 2:

Improving our health & performance, making decisions under complex adaptive systems

Week3:

The Philosophy of Exercise: A Personal View

Bio:

The course will be taught by:

  • Mark Baker (GuruAnaerobic): Former competitive athlete and coach. Club level senior 800m runner & world-level Masters sprinter. I’ve been interested in exercise, training, and nutrition for over 45years. I talk too much.
  • Urtats Etxegarai: After leaving engineering and academy, in coaching & managing our athletic club I have found the most complex of the challenges I have had so far. One that demands organization, adaptability, rigor, play, experimenting, intuition, and communication to help people grow. This demands my constant growth and is probably why I find it so interesting.
  • Jordan B. Goldstein: Ph.D. in Sports History and 7+ years teaching sports philosophy, sociology, and history. I recently quit academia to build a coaching and consulting business Phya Academy and to work on curriculum development at Synthesis School.

Host:

  • Mahmoud Rasmi (@decafquest): I ask questions, teach philosophy, and dwell under a nice Roman bridge in Salamanca.I am trying to take philosophy back to the marketplace by asking questions, creating a space for dialogue, and building bridges between disciplines. I have a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Salamanca Spain.
